The new waterworks has begun operation and is supplying initial quantities of water. Around 60 cubic meters were pumped at the start. Output has been gradually increased since then.
A comprehensive inspection was conducted before operations began. The public health department approved the facility after all analysis results were submitted and evaluated. Additionally, the waterworks was inspected on-site.
Even before the official start of operations, the system was running in a trial phase. Water was circulated through the plant, but not yet fed into the supply network. Instead, it was recirculated back into the settling pond. Now the next step has been completed: The treated water is flowing into the clean water reservoir.
Thus, one-third of the new waterworks is now operational, and the old plant will soon be shut down. "We deliberately ramped up the plant gradually to ensure maximum operational reliability," explains Axel Held, Managing Director of Nordseeheilbad Borkum GmbH. "The quality and safety of the water supply are our top priority," adds Managing Director Raphael Warnecke.
On Saturday, May 30, 2026, the new waterworks will be inaugurated with a party. From 17:00 PM onwards, Nordseeheilbad Borkum GmbH invites all guests and island residents to the grounds. The live band supen | freten | nöken | schlapen – featuring some members of the former band Marlons Room – will provide excellent entertainment. Afterwards, DJ Bogi will keep the party going until midnight. Food and drinks will be provided by Café Ostland and Bauernstuben. To ensure everyone can easily reach Ostland, a shuttle bus service will be provided via the Borkum Island Railway – the exact departure times will be announced later.
