On Maundy Thursday, the supervisory board of Nordseeheilbad Borkum GmbH (NBG) met to inspect the Borkum beach, from the Ronde Plate to the youth pool. The numerous challenges that arise from natural changes were highlighted and possible solutions were discussed. This affects, among other things, the Loopdeelenweg at the Südbad, the current milk stall situation at the Nordbad and Südbad as well as the guest provision at the nudist beach.
Last Monday, April 17th, construction work began on the construction of the new frame structures for three milk stalls at Nordbad, which will be permanently anchored all year round. Until completion, the “StrandFlair”, “Hinni's Strandoase” and the “Sundeck” will still be in a slightly different position and with a temporary structure for guest catering. “Due to the period at risk of storm surges, which ended on April 15th, we were unfortunately unable to begin construction of the stud frames earlier. The noise level could increase during the current construction period because heavy equipment is being used on the beach. We ask all residents, Borkum residents and guests for their understanding, but unfortunately we have no alternative when it comes to the time and type of work. This changed situation is expected to last at the three locations one after the other until June,” explains NBG Managing Director Göran Sell. “Since the renovation began this year with three milk stalls but cannot yet be fully completed, the offer will be supplemented by two 'gastronomy stalls', like those at Lüttje Markt. Our goal is still to ensure good culinary beach catering.”
The future permanent solution for the two milk stalls at Südbad still has to overcome further hurdles; both have received further toleration from the district for this year. “The granting of a building permit is related to the clarification of the permanent route from the 'Secret Love' to the Black Revetment. This has not yet been finalized,” said Sell. Due to delays in the delivery of materials, the remaining section of the Loopdeelenweg from Randzelstrasse to the Black Revetment could not yet be laid. Another new addition to the Südbad is a second DLRG rescue station on the dog beach. Since the movement of the Seehundsbank is well advanced, a bathing area at the height of the Middelhüsche no longer makes sense. To achieve this, the infrastructure at the Südbad will be improved as far as possible. Göran Sell says: “The beach experience will shift towards Südbad in the future, which is why we are constantly adapting the supply situation there to meet needs. This includes the second milk stall, the additional DLRG station as well as the relocation of the Loopdeelenweg and the toilet at the 'Café Hertha' entrance. It is unclear whether this will be a permanent solution. We still have to have a few discussions about that, because we are in the area of nature and coastal protection.”
On the nudist beach, however, there will be severe restrictions in terms of guest catering. The “Up Stee” beach sauna will not be operated for the time being for health reasons, and the beach chairs can only be used by prior order. “Borkumers and guests who still want to experience a holiday feeling there are still in good hands at the 'Dünenbudje' and the NBG's nudist buddies. We are also in contact with the beach tent rental association to consider other options that can best compensate for the health-related loss,” assures Sell.
