Press release – Beach sailing on Borkum

Just let yourself be carried by the wind and breathe freedom | April 7, 2021

There are only two places in Germany where holiday guests are trained to become beach sailors with a pilot's license. With its 26 kilometer long sandy beach, Borkum offers absolutely ideal conditions and conditions for this sport. Beach sailing has a long tradition on Borkum. It does not require strenuous physical exertion and can therefore be practiced by young and old alike.

This is the perfect wind: playing with the forces of nature while beach sailing
“When sand sailing you can completely switch off and literally let yourself be “drifted” by the wind. The sand yacht glides almost silently over the wide expanse of sand and even with a light breeze you can enjoy the feeling of freedom” - this is how Chris John from the kite buggy and sand sailing school World of Wind describes the fascination of sand sailing.
Especially after a time in which freedom of movement was restricted, the need for freedom, fun and adventure is particularly great. Borkum is the perfect place to enjoy the new holiday freedom - 30 kilometers from the mainland, located in the middle of the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Beach sailing professionals can reach speeds of over 100km/h in optimal wind conditions - without engine power. You can sail with winds as low as 6 to 8 knots. Depending on the wind strength, different sized sails are used. Beach sailing offers the opportunity to experience the breathtaking natural scenery and the kilometer-long northern beach of Borkum up close. It is not only a varied alternative for water sports enthusiasts, but also provides a lot of fun for sailing beginners.

Beach sailing is possible for everyone – even in old age and for people with disabilities
Beach sailing is a sport that has no age limit. Whether young or old, people over 80 also demonstrate their skills on Borkum. “Our oldest student got his pilot’s license at the age of 81, is now 84 years old and comes to us several times a year to sand sail,” says Chris John. He is the owner of “World of Wind” and offers introductory, basic and pilot license courses.
The operation of the sailing car and of course all questions about safety are on the sailing course schedule. Maneuvers such as jibes and tacks are trained on a course. More experienced people can test themselves by racing on a marked course.
A three-hour trial course costs 99 euros. It includes a short theoretical introduction, after which the participants can familiarize themselves with the sports equipment in detail on a closed course and practice the first maneuvers such as jibes and tacks. It is also important to bring the sand yacht, which has no brakes, to a safe stop. The sailing beginners are then ready for a basic course.
If you want to experience the fascination of this sport without physical activity, you can book the “double-seater format”. People with disabilities can also race across the beach as passengers on a trainer. The beach sailing school is open until the end of October.

Borkum: ideal place to stay for athletes and fitness fans
The North Sea island of Borkum, where you can breathe freedom, is, in addition to its diverse mix of culture, vitality and nature, just right for athletes and exercise fanatics. With its more than 130 kilometers of developed cycling and hiking trails, it invites you to run and tour between dunes and forests, over dikes and along the beach.
It guarantees a perfect combination of relaxation and sports holiday. A sporting highlight is the traditional beach volleyball tournament of the Lower Saxony Volleyball Association, which attracts numerous enthusiastic recreational athletes to the island every year on the weekends from the end of July to mid-August. A holiday on Borkum has been possible again for overnight tourists for a few weeks now, and the island has also been welcoming day tourists again since June 23rd.
