Press release – catshark release with the Nordsee Aquarium

Sponsorships are possible again | March 7, 2024

It's that time again: this Nordsee Aquarium Borkum releases animals raised in the aquarium into the vastness of the North Sea. On May 3rd and June 1st at 11.30:1,20 a.m. the young catsharks, all hatched and grown under the supervision of Claudia Thorenmeier and Maria Oetjen, will be released into the wild. “Small-spotted catsharks can grow up to four feet long. After 3-4 years in our aquarium they have reached a size of 30 cm, which means they are large enough to survive in the wild. Now the shark teens have to make room for the younger fish,” explains the operations manager Nordsee Aquariums, Claudia Thorenmeier.

Each of the animals would be happy to have a “shark sponsor”. The sponsors donate a contribution of 30 euros per desired shark for this Nordsee Aquarium Borkum, can give the shark a name and receive a certificate and a plaque in the entrance area of the aquarium. On the day of the release, there will be a short lecture in the aquarium about the life of catsharks and their journey from egg to sexually mature animal. Then you can accompany your sponsored animal to the water and say goodbye to him on the beach. The donated amounts are reinvested in the breeding program. Interested parties can register for sponsorships via Ticketpay www.nordsee-aquarium.de under “Actions” for the 3. May and the 1. June purchase, if you have any questions please feel free to email info@borkum.de.
