The North Sea island of Borkum has once again been certified as an allergy-friendly community by the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation (ECARF). Borkum was first awarded the ECARF seal in 2013.

This year, a total of 78 accommodations with 533 beds received certification. These include the Hotel Kachelot, the Hotel Strandvilla Janine, the Haus Alter Leuchtturm family holiday center, and 75 holiday apartments. The Markant supermarket, the Müller bakery, and the Nabrotzky bakery also received awards.

With its exceptionally clean air rich in iodine and aerosols, as well as its remarkably low pollen count, Borkum offers ideal conditions for allergy sufferers. Borkum is considered the first allergy-friendly island in Europe to receive ECARF certification.

“The renewed certification shows that the topic of allergy-friendliness is being implemented on Borkum with great commitment and on a long-term basis,” says Tourism Director Pia Hosemann. “This benefits both our guests and the participating businesses.”
