Borkum in the season of the senses: Winter should also be an experience

Kick-off with 45 participants – further interested parties welcome | September 1, 2025

When the North Sea waves crash, the wind blows clear your head, and not a soul is to be seen on the expansive beach, then the season of the senses has arrived. Borkum's healthy, bracing climate, the clear, salty air, and the UNESCO Wadden Sea World Heritage Site invite you to breathe deeply, slow down, and relax in winter. After a long walk, the paths leading from the dunes, sea, and lighthouse lead to the cozy four walls of our local restaurants for a cup of tea or grog. That's the island feeling!

With an initiative by Nordseeheilbad Borkum GmbH and Friederike Lekscha for the Season of the Senses, all landlords, hoteliers, restaurateurs, as well as self-employed individuals, cultural workers, and association members from all sectors are invited to join forces to make this special winter feeling visible. Under one roof, offers, arrangements, and events are being brought together to make the cold season on the island tangible – from nature and expanse to tradition and culture, to peace and balance.

Last week, 45 participants from all sectors accepted an invitation from Nordseeheilbad Borkum GmbH to the Kulturinsel (Culture Island) and gathered initial ideas in a relaxed atmosphere. Those who were unable to attend the kickoff are expressly invited to join in at any time and actively participate in shaping the Season of the Senses. Whether it's thalassotherapy and wellness packages, yoga and breathing retreats, guided mudflat, dune, and stargazing walks, culinary theme weeks featuring regional products, small concerts, readings, craft and creative workshops, family activities, cozy winter specials in hotels, vacation apartments, and restaurants, or simply the provision of space and materials – every idea and every suggestion is warmly welcome.

"Borkum's winter has its own magic: clear air, wide beaches, peace and warmth in a spirit of togetherness. With the Season of the Senses, we are pooling creative energies on the island and creating an offering that touches guests and opens up new perspectives for businesses," says Tourism Director Pia Hosemann. "Everyone can participate to the best of their ability. From small gifts to fully planned programs."
What's next? In the coming weeks, the developed modules will be curated and compiled into a joint winter calendar, which will be published via traditional print and online channels.

How to participate:
• Idea or offer with title, period and short description
• Contact person with contact details
• Optional: Photo, price range, target group

Submissions are now possible by email to: maximilian.rau@borkum.de
"Our goal is quality, authenticity, and community spirit. If we bring our strengths to bear, the Borkum winter will be an invitation to all the senses and a benefit for the entire island," says Maximilian Rau.
