The North Sea Aquarium Borkum is known for its successful breeding, even beyond Borkum's sea borders. Whether moon jellyfish, cat sharks or whelks: the diversity and selection of native and bred animal species in the aquarium is huge. Most recently, Maria and Ihno Oetjen were once again able to actively protect animals and release 18 animals into the wild. All are sexually mature and capable of reproduction. Seven plaice, four turbot, three sea bass, two cod, one whiting and a gurnard are now back in the North Sea. The reason: the approximately 15.000 liter tank in the North Sea aquarium, the previous home of the fish, is being renovated. The backup basin in the boiler house, however, “only” holds 4.500 liters. The time for the release into the wild came at exactly the right time: “The fact that renovation and the 'readiness for release' overlap so much is a great blessing for us. There would have been too many animals for the small tank. We moved from the aquarium to the boiler house with a tractor and trailer from the technical service/beach maintenance department. “Fortunately, everything worked smoothly,” says Ihno Oetjen from the North Sea Aquarium of Nordseeheilbad Borkum GmbH.
As soon as the work is completed, the animals come back into “their” tank. That will probably be on July 1st.
