Last Saturday, around 100 people participated in the FlensStrandGut garbage collection campaign on Borkum, which took place as part of International Coastal Cleanup Day. The volunteers demonstrated great commitment to protecting the environment.
From the bandstand, about 70 people, equipped with garbage bags, grabbers, gloves, caps and bags, started towards the north beach or to the Nordsee AquariumAt the same time, around 30 other volunteers received their equipment on the south beach to collect the trash washed up in front of the revetment. The timing couldn't have been better: A storm earlier this week had washed large amounts of trash onto the beaches, including leftover nets, dolly ropes, plastic packaging, and even paraffin.
After the work was done, the filled garbage bags were deposited in the beach garbage bins or at the aquarium. As a reward, the diligent collectors received Nordsee Aquarium A refreshing snack – cold drinks and the non-alcoholic coastal lemonade from the Flensburg Brewery were available. In addition, Nordseeheilbad Borkum GmbH gave all participants free entry to the Nordsee Aquarium. This allowed them to experience the animals whose habitat they had helped to clean up.
A special thank you goes to the team of Nordsee Aquariums and the committed members of the circle of friends Nordsee Aquarium Borkum eV, who actively supported the campaign.
The successful collection campaign impressively demonstrates how collective action can make an active contribution to environmental protection – and how important it is to clear the beaches and coasts of garbage in order to sustainably protect the sensitive ecosystem of the North Sea.
