Press release – Mobile “pump track” inaugurated at the Kulturinsel

New leisure activities were funded by the European Union | July 18, 2024

A new leisure facility from NBG and the town of Borkum has been completed. A so-called mobile "pump track" is located on the cultural island and can be used free of charge. The financing was made possible with the help of a subsidy rate of 65% of the total expenditure from the EU.

A pump track is a mobile skate and bike facility that can be used by both beginners and advanced skaters. During public discussions with young people, it became clear that a skate park and thus a meeting place in their free time was desired. With costs of around 68.500 euros, of which 65 percent is funded by the European Union and 25% of the funding amount (around 11.130 euros) is co-financed by the town of Borkum, the financial outlay for the NBG is around 12.840 euros.

In traditional skate parks, the often higher level of difficulty creates a barrier for younger and more nervous athletes. Pump tracks with their low elevations and rising curves invite you to try them out; the course can even be used with a scooter or balance bike. A higher or lower level of difficulty can be achieved by combining the individual pump track elements in different ways.

"We are very happy to be able to implement this project at such short notice as a leisure opportunity for children and young people. This means that the pump track can also be used by our summer guests," adds Pia Hosemann.

There are also plans to offer rental of scooters, balance bikes and protective equipment in the play island so that guests who arrive without equipment can also use the track.
