The Nordseeheilbad Borkum GmbH is once again fulfilling its self-imposed mission of active climate protection. Drinking water dispensers have been put into operation at six heavily frequented locations on the island. All thirsty cyclists and walkers can get delicious Borkum drinking water at the tourist information office, the mudflat entry point, the waterworks in Ostland, the water tower, the beach entrance at the Südbad or at the Nordbad. The project was funded with 80 percent by the NBank.
With the Borkum 2030+ habitat concept, the island of Borkum is pursuing a consistently ecologically, economically and socially sustainable development. The water museum makes the need for conscious use of the drinking water resource tangible in a special way. Drinking locally available (tap) water is active climate protection. This is proven by a study by the Berlin auditing company GUTcert on behalf of a tip:tap eV, in which the greenhouse gas balance of still mineral water was compared with drinking water. According to the study, an average of 202,74 g of CO₂ is produced per liter of bottled water - for tap water, on the other hand, only 0,35 g. The difference shows: in terms of CO2 emissions, tap water is 586 times more environmentally friendly than (still) bottled water.
The Borkumer Trinkwassermanufaktur/Borkumer Brunnenwater project is a pilot project for the North Sea region of Lower Saxony and is intended to make a contribution to the water transition. Away from the (plastic) bottles that are transported to the island in a way that is harmful to the climate and disposed of, or that have to be returned to the mainland as empties.
"Another important part of the project is imparting knowledge about drinking water. At each of the dispensers, educational boards for adults and children show the special features of Borkum's drinking water. Further information will be available digitally via a QR code on the devices with educational boards. Intended topics here include, for example, the global water supply and cycle as well as drinking water protection areas," explains project manager Raphael Warnecke.
